わたしたちの使命Our Mission

日本の人文社会科学は、日本語圏で育まれた豊かな研究土壌や、英語にとどまらない多様な言語との接触によって支えられてきました。そこから生まれる高水準の研究成果を、新たな反響や刺激が得られる国際舞台へと押し上げて、日本語圏の研究とのあいだに好循環を生み出すことは、喫緊の課題といえるでしょう。そのためには、すでに海外で活躍している研究者を招聘したり、国際発信を支援するイベントを個別に開催することに加えて、国際的に活躍できる研究者を国内で継続的に育成することが不可欠です。

本センターでは、質的研究の国際発信力を本学のリーダーシップのもとで内在的に向上させることを目標に、これまで個別局所的に行われてきた支援策を組織化し、初めての国際学会発表、トップジャーナル投稿、ひいては外国語研究書刊行までをシームレスに支援することを目指します。このような支援策をノウハウとして蓄積し、それを学内外に提供することで、本学主導のもと世界トップレベルの人文社会科学系研究者を継続的に輩出します。

2016年からはじまった「歴史家ワークショップ」の活動で蓄積した知見と経験にもとづいて、本センターでは上記の目標の達成に向けて努力いたします。

Internationalization is key to attaining the global standard of research in humanities. To this end academic institutions in Japan have often taken ad-hoc approaches such as inviting established overseas researchers or organizing sporadic international outreach events. It is, however, not possible to achieve sustainable growth of scholarship on a global level without systematically preparing researchers to disseminate their work worldwide.

Founded in April 2024, the Center for Global Advanced Studies at the University of Tokyo (CGAS) will pursue the following mission: 

• organize systematic skill-building for emerging scholars; 
• help them optimize their overseas research presentations and writings; and 
• promote the publication of monographs in foreign languages. 

To continuously form top scholars in humanities, we will develop our unique method and share it with other domestic and overseas academic institutions. The knowledge and experience accumulated through the activity of the Historians’ Workshop (HW) since 2016 will promote the achievement of our mission.
